History of Lucky Strike in Motorsport
Early Involvement
Lucky Strike first appeared sporadically in motorsport sponsorships during the 1970s and 1980s, mainly in touring car racing and motorcycle events. However, the brand became truly iconic in motorsport through its prominent partnerships in the 1990s and early 2000s.
Motorcycle Racing
One of Lucky Strike's most recognized involvements was in Grand Prix motorcycle racing. Throughout the 1990s, Lucky Strike sponsored Team Suzuki, which competed in the premier 500cc World Championship. With riders like Kevin Schwantz, Suzuki achieved significant success. Schwantz, riding a Lucky Strike-liveried Suzuki, won the 1993 500cc World Championship, cementing the brand's association with top-level motorcycle racing.
Formula 1
Lucky Strike's biggest motorsport presence came through Formula 1, particularly with the British American Racing (BAR) team. Founded by BAT in 1999, BAR entered F1 as a major marketing vehicle for its tobacco brands, including Lucky Strike.
Initially, the team experimented with dual branding (with Lucky Strike and 555 liveries) but eventually settled on a consistent Lucky Strike livery, featuring a distinctive red and white color scheme.
- 1999–2005: BAR competed in F1 with Lucky Strike branding, gradually improving its performance.
- 2004: BAR enjoyed its best season, finishing second in the Constructors' Championship, with drivers Jenson Button and Takuma Sato securing multiple podiums.
End of Involvement
The global clampdown on tobacco advertising in sports led to the gradual withdrawal of tobacco brands from motorsport. Lucky Strike's branding disappeared from Formula 1 after 2006, when the team transitioned to become the Honda Racing F1 Team, marking the end of Lucky Strike's high-profile motorsport involvement.
Legacy
Despite the eventual ban on tobacco sponsorship, the Lucky Strike livery remains iconic, especially among fans of 1990s motorcycle racing and early-2000s F1. It symbolizes an era when tobacco brands were deeply intertwined with motorsport's visual identity.
