Bruce McLaren and the McLaren Racing Team: A Brief History
Bruce McLaren was a talented New Zealand-born racing driver, engineer, and visionary who founded the McLaren Racing Team in 1963. Born in 1937 in Auckland, McLaren showed an early interest in mechanics and motorsport. He moved to Europe in the late 1950s, quickly making a name for himself by becoming the youngest Grand Prix winner at the time, taking victory at the 1959 United States Grand Prix at age 22 for Cooper.
In 1963, Bruce established Bruce McLaren Motor Racing Ltd. in Surrey, England. Initially, the team focused on building and racing sports cars. McLaren’s engineering skill and relentless drive helped the team innovate quickly. By 1966, McLaren entered Formula One as a constructor. Tragically, Bruce was killed in a testing accident in 1970 at Goodwood, but his legacy lived on.
Under new leadership, the team continued to grow, achieving major success in the 1970s. In the following decades, McLaren became one of Formula One’s most iconic and successful teams. The 1980s and 1990s saw legendary drivers like Ayrton Senna, Alain Prost, and Mika Häkkinen bring multiple championships to the team. Later, Lewis Hamilton won his first World Championship with McLaren in 2008.
Today, McLaren competes in Formula One and other racing series, while also running a successful supercar division. Bruce McLaren’s original vision — combining engineering excellence with racing passion — continues to define the team’s identity.
