Toleman Motorsport was a British racing team that competed in Formula One from 1981 to 1985. The team was founded by Ted Toleman, originally as a successful Formula Ford and Formula 2 outfit in the late 1970s. After dominating the 1980 European Formula 2 Championship with driver Brian Henton, Toleman stepped up to Formula One in 1981.
Their debut season was difficult. The Toleman TG181, powered by a turbocharged Hart engine, was underdeveloped and unreliable, leading to frequent failures to qualify. However, steady improvement followed. By 1983, with drivers Derek Warwick and Bruno Giacomelli, Toleman began to score points regularly.
Toleman’s most famous season came in 1984, when a young Ayrton Senna made his Formula One debut with the team. That year, Senna stunned the sport by finishing second in a rain-soaked Monaco Grand Prix, nearly catching leader Alain Prost before the race was red-flagged. The TG184 chassis became iconic for showcasing Senna’s talent and Toleman’s engineering progress. Despite flashes of brilliance, financial pressures and disputes with suppliers led to instability. In 1985, after further solid results with Teo Fabi and Piercarlo Ghinzani, the team was sold to Benetton, a major sponsor that took over the entry and rebranded it as Benetton Formula in 1986.
